Your Fall HVAC Checklist

Amidst the summer heat it can be difficult to plan ahead for the chillier months. While you may love (or hate) the heat, it is inevitable that cooler months will come again. There is much to love about the changing seasons, but we find that every year as the leaves begin to gather in piles, so do our to-do lists. To help you prepare, we have compiled our very own Fall Checklist.

Remove AC Units from Windows

If you’ve opted for AC units in your windows then they’ll have to be removed for the cooler months. The leaves and snow can cause damage to the AC unit and leaving them in the window will let a lot of cold air into your home.

Plan ahead! Schedule preventative maintenance now, before the first cold front, to beat the rush and ensure reliable, efficient home comfort this heating season!

Replace your HVAC Filter

It is recommended that you change your HVAC filters every few months , change of season is  the perfect time to do this. Keep in mind, filters tend to collect more dust during the winter months.

Prepare your Heating System for Inspection

Look over your heating system and clear away whatever may be obstructing your unit. You will want to leave plenty of space around it as blockage can become a fire hazard once your system kicks back on in the fall. You may also want to clean the outside of your unit if there is any dirt buildup or debris.

Schedule a Heating System Tune-Up by a Professional

We highly recommend scheduling this early! We tend to get busy during the fall months as everyone scrambles to get ready for winter.  According to energy.gov, a professional tune-up is necessary as it ensures that your system is running smoothly and efficiently when the inevitable cold weather arrives. This is truly the simplest, and most effective, way to keep you and your family cozy all winter long.

This is also a good time to Check Safety Devices:

  • Don’t wait until your smoke detector is beeping to check the batteries—when you turn your clocks, change your batteries. You’ll also want to test your carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re working properly.
    • Check to see if your fire extinguisher is in good shape and if not, it’s time to buy a new one.
    • Get a home check for radon which is more likely to get trapped in your home when it’s cold outside and windows are closed.
